N. N. Miklouho-Maclay Fellowship


You were the first to demonstrate beyond question by your experience that man is man everywhere, that is, a kind, sociable being with whom communication can and should be established through kindness and truth, not guns and spirits. I do not know what contribution your collections and discoveries will make to the science for which you serve, but your experience of contacting the primitive peoples will make an epoch in the science for which I serve i.e. the science which teaches how human beings should live with one another.

2009 Macleay Miklouho-Maclay Fellowship

Applications are invited from candidates for the 2009 Macleay Miklouho-Maclay Fellowship. The Fellowship was established in 1988 with funds raised by the Macleay Museum and the Miklouho-Maclay Society to enable a Research Fellow to work at the Macleay Museum in the fields of interest of Sir William Macleay (1820-1891) and Nikolai Miklouho-Maclay (1846-1888). There is no specific application form. Candidates should submit their research proposal together with a curriculum vitae.

Funding is available up to AU$12,000. The successful candidate will be based in the Macleay Museum full time for a minimum of three months or part-time equivalent. Candidates are encouraged to finish their projects within twelve months of the start date.

The Fellowship is awarded under the following conditions (approved by the Academic Board on 24 April 1989)

  • The object of the Fellowship shall be to promote work within the Macleay Museum principally in the areas of Anthropology and Zoology but also in approved aspects of Botany or History of Science. Specific fields of study may be prescribed by the Selection Committee from year to year. The Fellow will be encouraged to use the collections of the Macleay Museum.
  • A Fellow may be appointed on a part-time or a full-time basis for a period ranging from a minimum of three months to a maximum of twelve months.
  • A Fellow shall be a suitably qualified graduate of any tertiary institution approved by the Academic Board or an individual with an established scholarly reputation.
  • A Fellow may be required to participate in lectures or demonstrations during the period of the appointment, at the discretion of the Director of the Macleay Museum.
  • The Fellow will within three months of completion of the fellowship provide the Director of the [Macleay] Museum with a report on work completed during the fellowship, including copies of any publications derived in whole or in part from the support provided by the Fellowship.
  • It is generally expected that a Fellow’s work will result in the production of one or more scholarly articles or form part of a larger study. In any publication the support provided by the Fellowship must be suitably acknowledged.
  • A Fellow shall be appointed by the Academic Board on the recommendation of a committee consisting of:

Chair, Academic Board Graduate Studies Committee;
Head of the Department of Anthropology;
Head of the School of Biological Sciences;
Senior Curator of the Macleay Museum;
A representative of the Miklouho-Maclay family.

The period of, and emolument for, each fellowship shall be determined by the Selection Committee on the basis of available funds.
