Commercial Photographers

The first commercial photographers came to Australia in the 1840s. They were few in number and mainly concertrated on portraiture. The late 1850s really saw the expansion of commercial photography in Australia while improvements in the technology enabled them to take more photographs outside the studio. The Macleay Museum, has many examples of some of the most famous early Australian commercial photographers.
