Dorothy Powell Album
1926 Science Conference
In 1926 Dorothy Powell recorded her trip across Australia on the trans Australia Railway to the Science Conference held in Perth. Accompanying her on the trip were many well known scientists who contributed their photographs of the journey for this album which Dorothy donated to the Macleay Museum. Scientists who were with Dorothy on the trip include, E De C Clarke W.A., C Madigan S.A., R Jack S.A., E Skeats Vic., J Dunn, S Compton W.A., K Ward S.A., D Mawson, L Cotton, W R Browne, L L Waterhouse, G W Osbourne, I Browne, D W Whitehouse, K Branch, J Hosking,E Lander, f Quodling, Aubrey Nicholls, and D Taylor. On the Irwin River Excursion from which the above photo was taken there were 29 scientists including 5 lady geologists, Florrie Quodling, Eleanor Lander, Ida Browne, Dorothy Taylor and Dorothy Powell.
The Album has been extensively annotated by Dorothy with dates, people and places in the photographs, as well as photographer. The photographers in the album include Lionel Lawry Waterhouse, Ida Browne, Leo Cotton, I Houison, William Rowan Browne, E Lander , J Hosking
She left Melbourne on the 17th of August 1926 on the Melbourne Adelaide Express and arrived in Perth on the 22nd. From there they went to the Irwin River from the 26th-30th August, on a day trip to the coastal plains to see the Cardup Quarry and Brickwork's located in Precambrian slates. On the 1st of September visited the Western Australian Goldfields and passed through Bullfinch, Manxman and Golden Valley to visit the first gold mine in Western Australia. On the 3rd they began their trip back to Port Augusta.
