Harold Cazneaux (1878 - 1953)

The Macleay Museum has a small number Silver Gelatin Prints by Harold Cazneaux. These images are mounted on card and are either exteriors of the University of Sydney or interiors from the Faculty of Medicine.

Background

Harold Pierce Cazneaux was born on the 30th of March 1878 in Wellington new Zealand.In the 1890's the family moved to Adelaide and later Cazneaux moved to Sydney in 1904 where he worked as a photographer in Freeman & Co. studio. In 1907 he began showing his photographs at exhibitions around Sydney and in 1914 he won Kodak's "happy Moments" contest. In 1920 he did the cover photo for the first edition of "Home" magazine and sparked a new trend in photography using sunshine effects. He produced a an extraordinary diversity of work from portraits of well known Australian figures, landscapes, contributions to books and magazines. He was elected an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Great Britain in 1938. He died at his Roseville home on the 19th June 1953.
