May (1881-1931) & Minna (1882-1957) Moore

Background

May (1881-1931) & Minna (1882-1957) Moore were sisters who established a studio in Melbourne in 1913. They were originally born on a small farm north of Auckland in New Zealand and established their first studio in Wellington new Zealand. To make their work distinctive they used limp mounting boards and a bromide paper with a canvas finish, although this is not case in the Macleay Museums photo.

The portrait in the Macleay Museum Collection was taken around 1915 and is of Jack Johnson just before his departure to fight in World War One in France & Belgium.
