What our Education Programs offer
The Education Program at the Nicholson Museum has been operating for many decades, providing educational excellence in the study of the ancient world. In 2007 University Museums Education Programs have expanded to incorporate the Macleay Museum (natural history and ethnography) and the University Art
Gallery (visual arts). The philosophy still remains the same: to make museums fun and to share our passion for our collections. All our guides are qualified and experienced practitioners in their respective fields, and enjoy sharing their knowledge and expertise. All are trained to assist visitors in developing their skills of analysis and interpretation.
We can organise visits for school groups from K-12 (even preschools and day care centres), and adult education groups from all backgrounds. The programs are designed to focus on items in the collections which are relevant to NSW syllabuses.
We are visited each year by thousands of students from state and private schools all over NSW and ACT, and by people from all sorts of organisations and educational groups.
Most importantly, visitors are given the chance to participate in the museums, with sessions allowing handling of archaeological artefacts and natural specimens, and activities designed for visitors of different age groups, including wearing ancient costumes, hearing Dreamtime stories, and creating art inspired by the works on display. The Education Programs make the museum experience unforgettable and inspiring.
The Education Programs have a flexible structure: you can book a specialised tour focusing on one of the three collections, or a general tour of all three. We can also provide tours of the University of Sydney’s Camperdown campus and provide information on campus life for students contemplating tertiary studies.
We can also tailor a visit to suit your specific needs, from specialised, detailed studies which complement HSC class work, through to broad introductions to history, art and science for younger students. For advice on what we can offer, call our Manager of Education Programs on +61 2 9036 5409.
