Sydney University has become the only Australian university to offer recent graduates a new management degree that partners with some of the world's top companies and Europe's leading business schools.

Professor Peter Wolnizer, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, said the new Master of Management degree - open to top students from both business and non-business degrees - will "open doors for top students internationally".

The international connection is through the University's membership of CEMS- the Community of European Management Schools and International Companies, a strategic alliance of leading business schools and multinational companies, including Adidas, Nokia and McKinsey & Company. The University of Sydney is the only Australian partner university.

The best students in the program will have the chance to complete the CEMS Master of International Management, the flagship degree of the Community of European Management Schools, an alliance of Europe's top 18 business schools, including the London School of Economics and HEDC Paris.

"It is the only Australian degree that allows students to participate in the prestigious CEMS Master of International Management program, enabling students to study and work overseas," Professor Wolnizer said.

Putting students to work

As Australia's only 'pre-experience' management degree, it will also give top students "a unique opportunity to extend their qualifications before entering the workforce", he said.

This innovative Masters of Management degree, commencing in March 2009, will provide graduates with practical management skills, says program director Associate Professor Nick Wailes.

"Today's companies desperately want young recruits, but they are often unsure whether a university degree translates into working effectively in their organisation," he says.

"This degree meets that need by essentially putting students through the wind tunnel. Students learn to provide integrated solutions to business problems so they are fully job ready. They also spend six weeks working with our partner companies applying their knowledge in a real-world environment.

"CEMS and its corporate partners, which include many of the world's top companies such as JP Morgan and Procter & Gamble, were closely consulted on the design of the degree," he says. "Our students will be taking advantage of a degree that is modelled on one developed by some of the best companies and business schools in the world."

The twelve month program is targeted at top students from both a business-related discipline, such as accounting, as well as students from fields such as arts or science who want to pursue corporate and international careers. It will include a six-week internship with leading companies and sponsors, including Deloitte, CEMS's newest corporate partner.
