Historic cricket win savoured

9 May 2003

The University's success in winning the Sydney Grade Cricket final for the first time since 1914 prompted the following letter of congratulation from Fellow of Senate John McCarthy QC, convenor of the Senate Sports Liaison Committee, to Ian Foulsham of the SU Cricket Club:

Dear Ian,

The Cricket Club Dinner 2003 was a momentous and marvellous occasion. I was delighted to be present and to witness such a heartfelt celebration.

The heroic victory of the 1st XI, after so long, is amongst the greatest sporting achievements of our University and will be recognised and recalled as such in the years to come.

For the cricket club, a great future lies ahead in which many fine cricketers will be attracted to share the success and the camaraderie of your members.

It is a poignant moment for all those who have been associated with the cricket club down through the years. It was moving to learn of so many, commencing with Alan Crompton and Greg Harris, who had wept with joy as they absorbed and savoured the great news about the 1st XI. The success of the 5ths and the other club teams rounded out an outstanding season.

The cricket club is an expanding centre of excellence at Sydney University. All who have been part of the 2003 cricket saga are an inspiration to our University as we strive for recognition as one of the great universities of the world and the finest university in Australia.

Warmest regards,

John McCarthy QC
