New Concepts and Technologies for Energy Efficient Buildings: Results and Experiences from German Demonstration Buildings

Professor Andreas Wagner Building Science Group, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

In this public lecture, visiting Professor Andreas Wagner discusses the findings from over 50 research projects running throughout Germany where innovative building materials, advanced HVAC systems and Integrated Simulation & Design Tools have been applied to new and retrofitted residential and commercial buildings.

Analysis of projects includes building performance, comparison of specific end-use energy consumption, evaluation of new technologies in situ, validation of models and control strategies.

The EU has stringent guidelines on energy efficiency requirements for new and retrofitted buildings, and Germany is widely regarded as being at the forefront of the practical application of sustainable building design within Europe. One of the key strategies in Germany has been a suite of demonstration buildings that provide "real-world" empirical evidence of the effectiveness of various energy-saving techniques and technologies.

Professor Wagner will discuss the lessons learned from retrofitting residential buildings and new office buildings, including interior and exterior insulation, glazing, hybrid ventilation concepts, passive cooling, heating and cooling with renewable energies and other thermal systems.

While the German climate doesn't match those of Australia's main population centres, his Sydney lecture will translate the German experience to Australia's climatic context.

This is the only public lecture from Professor Wagner during his time in Australia. A short course in Sustainable Building Simulation will also be led by Professor Wagner, starting 23rd of November 2009.
