Sakae Terai performing at Sydney University |
Professional Noh actor Sakae Terai's performance of Lady Shizuka's farewell dance from the Noh drama, Funa Benkei, was a highlight of his recent three-month residency as honorary associate in Japanese Studies at the University.
Sponsorship by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in Japan enabled five performers of the Kanze School to be flown from Japan to join Mr Terai in the authentic Noh performance complete with traditional pine-tree backdrop.
The lecture-performance included Mr Terai (pictured in kimono) being publicly dressed from underclothes to full regalia by colleagues.
The event, which was attended by the Consul-General of Japan, was the culmination of several lectures and workshops given by Mr Terai who is also an adviser for cultural affairs in Japan.
"It has been a marvellous opportunity," said Dr Yasuko Claremont, acting chair of Japanese Studies. "Our students were honoured and enjoyed not only his authoritative appearance in a man's kimono, but more importantly his commitment to his art."
