Snowy Mountains Trip

29 May 2009

As the winter months start coming in and it becomes too cold for trips to Manly and Bondi beach, IH residents organised a weekend trip to the Snowy Mountains. The trip was organised by Pete who is a snow enthusiast and well acquainted with the region.

The group of 11 residents were in for an early start on Friday morning as they met at 7:30 to start heading south in a mini bus hired by the House.

Pete was the first designated driver and responsible for navigation. After an hour of driving the early start caught up with him and he decided to move to the back and catch-up on some sleep. Unfortunately, when passing the wheel to Lucas it did not occur to him that although Lucas may know the streets of France well, he had absolutely no idea how to get to the Snowy Mountains. After a nice nap Pete woke up to find they had driven to Canberra!

The slight detour turned out to be a nice stopover. The group spent the morning in Canberra, visited the Parliament House, House of Representatives and had a great view of Canberra from the Parliament Roof.

They finally arrived in Perisher Valley late afternoon on Friday and made their way to the Lodge. As there were no set plans for the weekend they setoff to explore the surrounding area, however, they did not get very far until they were caught up in fiery snowball fight. Pete and Adam were in charge of dinner that night and cooked up an enormous Kangaroo steak dinner.

To prepare for a long day the team started Saturday with a big pancake breakfast and then setoff to the foot of Australia's highest mountain, Mt. Kosciuszko (2228 meters). The group walked along a nature trail and had great views of the region. After an exhausting day of exploring and hiking the crew relaxed in a bar for a while before having a festive spaghetti meal.

On the trip back to Sydney, the group made a couple of small stopovers at different ski resorts to enjoy the views.

The Group arrived back at IH at 8pm well and truly tired out after a very busy weekend
