Please provide a brief description of yourself (age, nationality, hobbies, etc...)

My name is Minal Khilani and I am 19 years old. I am ethnically Indian. I was born and grew up in Hong Kong, I graduated from high school in June 2008 and started my studies at The University of Sydney in March 2009. I moved to International House in my first semester and plan on staying as long as they'll have me!

What are you studying and why did you choose the University of Sydney?

I am currently in my first year of studying a Bachelor of Economics in the world-renowned Economics and Business faculty at The University of Sydney.

Sydney, as a city offers a multicultural, vibrant atmosphere. The University of Sydney is one of the only campus-based Universities in the world located in the heart of a metropolitan city. It is a highly regarded University and attracts students from all around the world.

What made you choose International House?

Coming from and growing up in such a multicultural background, International House seemed like the obvious choice. IH allows me to experience and learn about different cultures and traditions under one rooftop. IH caters to a diverse range of students and I would highly recommend it to anyone, from those fresh out of high school to those doing a PhD.

What aspect of life at International house do you enjoy most?

There are so many great things about IH, but I would have to say the best thing about it is the people I've met and lifetime friendships that I've formed. The diversity of people and unique personalities make IH what it is today. All residents at IH bring something different to the table. It is so fascinating learning about other people's experiences and exposing yourself to different cultures. My Mandarin is even improving! I've met some amazing people here, and I hope our friendship continues beyond the walls of IH.

In what way have you been involved with the International House Members Association (IHMA) and how has this enhanced your university experience?

IHMA is a great way to get involved in IH and meet people outside your friendship group. I was elected as the Sports Coordinator in my first semester at IH and I have loved planning events.

Being part of IHMA has enhanced my University experience in different ways. I've gotten to know different kinds of people outside of my friendship group and I've improved my communication and teambuilding skills. I've also used my passion for sports to engage people and get them involved in the IH community.

What is your favourite event of the year and what do you enjoy most about this event?

I haven't been in IH for a full year yet but so far the 1920s themed Harbour Cruise has been my favourite event of the year. Cruising through Darling Harbour, with the spectacular view of Circular Quay, delicious food and everyone dressed up as gangsters and molls created a great atmosphere. It was an unforgettable night!
