GUIDELINES FOR DISPOSAL OF ASBESTOS

These guidelines describe how to dispose of asbestos and items which have some asbestos content. Responsibilities for the management of different aspects of asbestos disposal are explained.

Building Fabric

Asbestos elements of building fabric (for buildings owned by the University) are the responsibility of Campus Property Services (CPS). The Asset Manager should be contacted for any building asbestos issues, including disposal of this asbestos (phone the CPS Service Desk on ext 17838 or the Asset Manager on ext 13345).

Items/Appliances with Asbestos Content

Items such as some ovens which contain asbestos are to be disposed of as asbestos waste (separation of the asbestos may be prohibitively expensive). These items are owned by particular departments and their safe disposal is the responsibility of the department concerned. Details of suitable asbestos contractors can be obtained from the Asset Manager, Campus Property Services (phone the CPS Service Desk on ext 17838 or the Asset Manager on ext 13345).

Asbestos

Pure asbestos and items such as asbestos mats may be disposed of as hazardous waste. The disposal of hazardous waste is coordinated (for the Camperdown, Darlington, Rozelle and Camden campuses) by OHS & Injury Management. Please refer to the Hazardous Waste Disposal Guidelines.
