PARADISEC (Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures)
Did you know that there are over 6,000 different languages spoken in the world today, and that over 2,000 of these languages originate in the Asia-Pacific region? What do these languages sound like and who speaks them today? What does the associated music sound like? The PARADISEC project aims to digitally record as many of these languages and music types as possible, before they become extinct.
Dr Linda Barwick, from the University of Sydney heads this groundbreaking project - which is a collaboration between the University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, the Australian National University and the University of New England. The project involves linguists, anthropologists and musicologists.
