Synopsis

One-dimensional semiconductor nanowires (NWs) have significant applications as active components of electronic, optoelectronic and electromechanical devices. The reliability and even functionality of these devices can depend strongly on their mechanical properties. Recent investigations have revealed significant effects of NW dimensions on the mechanical behaviour of semiconductor NWs. This project aims to conduct in-situ nano-compression and tensile experiments in a transmission electron microscope combined with finite element analysis to understand the details of these size effects on different semiconductor materials and the structural mechanisms behind the observed phenomena.
