Regenerative engineering – chemo-physical properties gradient as a tool to control cell responses

Summary

This project will develop a new CO2 based technologies to impregnate the implant surfaces with functional biomolecules and create topography. The primary aim is to develop a new, cost effective and ‘green’ technology to modify effectively implant surface and create a gradient of the properties. It is expected that modified surfaces will promote integration in the body because materials will be capable to regulate cell responses so that material interaction in the body environment will be significantly enhanced.

Synopsis

The aim of the project is to develop the next generation of functional surfaces using CO2 impregnation. Central to this aim is the development of the technology to modify topography of the surface and impregnate it with functional groups. Novel approaches to examine effects of the surface modifications, mechanics, bioactivity, chemical composition and cellular interactions will be developed in the project.

Additional information

The project will involve the use of state of art facility to modify and examine the surfaces including: AFM, MFP, SICM, cell culture. The project will be carried out in collaborations with several research group at the University of Sydney and externally.
