Synopsis

Pre-eclampsia is the most common serious medical disorder in pregnancy.  It is one of the top causes of perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide.  The pathogenesis of the condition is poorly understood and at present, apart from delivery, there is no treatment available.  The ability to predict in early pregnancy which women will develop pre-eclampsia would help researchers concentrate their efforts and help clinicians identify women to whom care could be focused and outcomes improved.  This project will investigate the use of ultrasound (both maternal and fetal) and immunological markers to help predict which women will develop pre-eclampsia.  More reliable methods of patient assessment and management will be studied to optimize care. The Nepean Clinical School is situated at Nepean Hospital, Penrith.  The hospital is a large tertiary referral unit for maternal fetal medicine patients, has a neonatal intensive care unit and delivers over 4000 babies per year.  The School carries out both basic and clinical research in all disciplines of medicine and is particularly strong in perinatal medicine. This presents opportunities for PhD projects in the following:

  • The use of Doppler ultrasound to predict which pregnancies are at risk of developing pre-eclampsia
  • The use of immunological markers (eg Treg cells) to predict which pregnancies are at risk of developing pre-eclampsia
  • The relationships between the clinical and or laboratory assessment of women with pre-eclampsia and outcomes
  • The use of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in pre-eclampsia
  • The role of corticosteroids in the treatment of severe pre-eclampsia

Additional Information

Techniques: Doppler ultrasound
