Synopsis
Twin and family studies support a genetic effect on osteoporosis. Twin studies of osteoporosis have been running at the Royal North Shore Hospital since 1996, in conjunction within the Australian Twin Registry, recruiting large numbers of same sexed identical and non-identical twin pairs. Baseline data on bone density, body composition, stored sera, markers of bone turnover as well as DNA are currently available. Current studies are focusing on differences in bone, arthritis, fat and cardiovascular phenotypes from longitudinal studies in twins.
