Dr Michele Ford-
The chair of the department of Indonesian Studies, Dr Michele Ford, draws on methods associated with sociology, anthropology, history and political science in her cross-disciplinary research on social movements, labour migration, grassroots politics and Southeast Asian borderlands. Dr Ford is currently working on an ARC Discovery project about union-NGO collaboration around migrant labour issues in the major destination countries of East and Southeast Asia and an ARC International Linkage Grant (with Lenore Lyons) on Southeast Asian borderlands.

Dr Dwi Noverini Djenar-
Dr Novi Djenar is a linguist who specializes in Indonesian language. Her research interests include language variation and change, the semantics of person-reference, youth language, the interface between speech and writing, and the linguistic manifestations of ‘place’ in spoken and written discourse.

Synopsis
The department of Indonesian Studies evolved from the former department of Indonesian and Malayan Studies, which was the earliest Australian university department to specialise in the study of Indonesian languages and societies. The department emphasises the importance of providing a rounded education in Indonesian Studies, producing graduates who have both language skills and significant country knowledge. Academic staff have expertise in areas such as Indonesian history, politics, literary and cultural studies and social change (labour movements, civil society organizations, and social activism) and literary and cultural studies.
