Throughout Professor Austin-Broos' research career, she has sought to integrate the study of cultural difference with issues of social inequality and social justice. She also has an intense interest in the issue of change and the manner in which indigenous people, and the colonised and the enslaved respond to changes that have been foisted upon them.

Dr Sheleyah Courtney’s research was conducted among marginalised and impoverished intra-state migrant women of Varanasi, a holy city in North India. Her research explores issues in Hindu diasporic urban communities in India such as violence, cosmology, gender, space and cultural understandings of illness.

Associate Professor Daryl Feil's research areas include: Melanesia, especially Papua New Guinea; Mediterranean, especially Italy and Venice; Economy, exchange, comparative and evolutionary issues; history, cultural performance; art and representation.

Dr High's early research concerned poverty and policy in rural Laos. She has written about the implementation of the World Bank poverty reduction polices, the effects of governmental decentralization, uses of the concept of "community", and the history of the Thai/Lao border.

Dr Gaynor Macdonald-
Dr Macdonald's contribution to Australian Aboriginal anthropology has been in reinscribing recognition of the distinctive cultural practices, characterising Aboriginal peoples’ lives in southeast Australia. She challenges the long-held view that difference reflects failed processes of incorporation.

Dr Neil Maclean-
Fieldwork with the Maring of the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea has focused on themes of the local relationship to the cash economy, the post-colonial nation state, and a developing, if contradiction ridden, national cultural field. These ethnographic themes have entailed the development of a strong historical anthropological orientation with an insistence that the trajectories of contemporary Papua New Guinea cannot be understood without a historiography of the colonial legacy - pursued through archival work in the National archives of both Australia and Papua New Guinea.
