Dr Callaway's research interests include: Australian visual culture from European contact to mid-twentieth century, the special role of ephemeral art in fostering and maintaining cultural links between colony and metropole, cross-cultural appropriation of indigenous and non-indigenous imagery, especially in Australia and North America and the Nineteenth-century spectacle and performance. .

Dr Louise Marshall's research interests include: Italian Renaissance plague images, with a particular focus on the process of intercession and the protective role of images in coping with the experience of bubonic plague; the imagery and cult of St Sebastian as 'alter Christus' ('another' or 'second Christ'); St Nicholas of Tolentino as a 'failed' plague saint and reading the body in the late drawings of Michelangelo Buonarotti.

Dr Jennifer Milam’s research interests include: the idea of play in 18th century France, particularly as formulated by rococo painters; the importance of gender and age distinctions during the Enlightenment, and the role played by visual images in creating categories and women's patronage in the 18th century, and how commissioning and collecting as an activity was used for image power and status.

Dr Catriona Moore’s research interests include: comparative study of women modernist artists in the pre- and inter-war years from selected British Dominions and new republics (primarily New Zealand, Australia, Canada, South Africa, and tangentially India); contemporary feminist art and writing; contemporary Australian art; contemporary international art, with particular focus on post-colonial and feminist issues and electronic media.

Dr Richard Smith-
Dr Richard Smith’s principle area of research interest is the temporality and form of the cinematic image, the place of technology and thought in generic and formal change and the range of theories useful for considering these aspects of cinema. Within this principle area of research he engages with structuralist and poststructuralist accounts of meaning and its production, materialist and idealist accounts of cinematic technology, Bergsonian and Deleuzian concepts of time and evolution, phenomenological accounts of cinematic subjectivity.

Summary
The department of Art History and Film Studies was founded forty years ago, in 1967, as part he department of Art History and Film Studies was founded forty years ago, in 1967, as part of the Power Institute of Fine Arts, and initially concerned itself with the history of painting, sculpture and architecture of Europe, with some reference to Australia. Since then it has responded to the radical transformations in the nature of art history itself and to the explosion of ‘visual studies’, taking in the areas of film, television, digital technology, photography, design, costume, style and cultural studies. The department has also responded to its geographical and cultural location by introducing study and research into Aboriginal and Asian art.
