Dr Danielle Celermajer-
Dr Danielle Celermajer's general research area is the question of how to construct socially just political communities in the context of diveristy (religious, racial, economic, ethnic and political) and in the light of historical violations. To this end, she focuses on international human rights law and institutions and their domestic appication, and mechanisms for dealing with violations in the past (truth commissions, apologies, international criminal law).

Dr Catriona Elder's areas of research expertise are in 20th century Australian cultural identity, especially relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Australia. This includes work on ideas of assimilation in popular fiction; whiteness and government immigration and Indigenous policy in the 1950s and 1960s.

Dr Amanda Elliot's key research interests focus around the relationship between social movements and welfare states, the politics of policy-making and the restructuring of contemporary welfare states. She has particular expertise in the field of Australian and comparative health policy and financing having spent two years as a senior health policy analyst in the Australian Parliament.

Dr Howard-Wagner’s area of research expertise is socio-legal studies, including identities rights and the law, Indigenous people, issues and the law, terrorism, refugees, environmental, and tort law reform. Dr Howard-Wagner has applied qualitative and quantitative socio-legal research experience, particularly in relation to Indigenous law and personal injury and compensation law.

Synopsis
Sociology is the study of human behaviour and patterns of social interaction in their institutional, organisational and cultural settings. Sociological research at the University of Sydney emphasises both an historical and comparative approach to understanding the modern world and contemporary social issues. Staff in the department of Sociology and Social Policy have expertise in a large number of research areas and are currently working on a range of specific research projects, commissioned consultancies and publications. The department encourages a culture of research and debate, and fosters research through individual and collaborative research development amongst staff, and through the development of a strong postgraduate research degree program.
