Student support and resources

Research assistance is provide through centres, programs and deans, to help postgraduate research students achieve their full potential.

Careers Centre

The Careers Centre provides careers advice and help in finding course-related work while you are studying, as well as assisting in obtaining full-time employment as you commence your career after graduation.

Dean of Graduate Studies

The Dean of Graduate Studies serves as a focus for all postgraduate research and coursework activities across the University. The Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies works closely with Deans, Associate Deans (Postgraduate Studies), Heads of Schools/Departments, Postgraduate Coordinators, Supervisors, SUPRA and Postgraduate Students.

Financial Assistance Office

The Financial Assistance Office offers bursaries and loans to students in financial hardship.

Graduate Studies Committee

The Graduate Studies Committee of the Academic Board deals with all postgraduate matters and advises the Board and the University community on policy and strategy. The committee includes representatives from all faculties and from SUPRA.

Induction programs

We hold a University-wide induction program (full-day) in August for all postgraduate students. We cover areas such as academic integrity, occupational health and safety, intellectual property rights of students, professional ethics, and resources as well as other relevant issues. Faculty induction programs/workshops will follow on from this program. For instance:

  • The Faculty of Engineering conducts an induction program each year, covering such topics as the characteristics of good researchers, the resources of the learning centre, effective use of the library, research ethics, and the management of intellectual property.
  • The Faculty of Economics and Business has implemented a semester-long induction program - compulsory for all new research students - that includes topics such as what constitutes a PhD, supervision, choosing and refining a topic, library resources and effective time management.

Institute for Teaching and Learning

The Institute for Teaching and Learning assists postgraduate research students who are interested in academic careers by providing courses and workshops on teaching, tutoring and demonstrating skills.

International Office

The International Office helps overseas students with application, admission and enrolment procedures, as well as scholarships, health insurance and visa matters. The International Student Services Unit provides orientation, counselling and welfare services to students and their families.

Learning Centre

The Learning Centre has developed many programs that are delivered either centrally or within faculties. The programs cover thesis writing, and include sessions on writing literature reviews and journal articles and reporting research results.

Postgraduate research studies handbook

Early in their first semester of study, all new postgraduate research students receive a copy of the Postgraduate research studies handbook. The handbook provides information about:

  • Research training conditions.
  • Supervision and facilities.
  • Code of practice for supervision of postgraduate research students.
  • Intellectual property rule 2002.

Research Office and scholarships

The Research Office administers scholarships, awards, and grants-in-aid for research training. Some faculties and departments also offer postgraduate research scholarships or supplementary scholarships.

Supervision

The roles and responsibilities of supervisors and research candidates are laid out in the Postgraduate Research Studies Handbook.

Our graduate research training goals demand outstanding supervisors. Each new supervisor must complete the Postgraduate Supervisors Development Program training before supervising postgraduate candidates.

Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association (SUPRA)

SUPRA is run by postgraduate students for postgraduate students. All postgraduate students belong to the association, which helps them with academic and personal problems.

University Library

The University Library provides a range of services for research students, including orientation programs, workshops developing information literacy skills, sessions on the use of electronic information resources and access to document delivery services.
