Who We Are
The Research Institute for Asia and the Pacific (RIAP) is a research and training unit within the International Portfolio of the University of Sydney.
Founded in 1989, RIAP initiates, develops and manages multidisciplinary projects that support the international development priorities of the University. RIAP also plays a role in supporting the foreign policy outreach activities of the Australian government and organisations, and the capacity building needs of countries in the Asia Pacific region.
Drawing upon the expertise and resources of the University, as well as regional institutions and professional consultants, RIAP delivers training, conducts research and provides policy advice in areas such as public sector reform, economic development, financial governance, environmental management, international aid coordination and human resource development.
Our clients include foreign governments, domestic and multinational private enterprises, aid agencies such as AusAID, and multilateral trade forums and development bodies such as APEC, World Bank, Asian Development Bank and UN agencies.

Governance & Structure
Subject to the direction of the University Senate, the entire control of the business of the Research Institute for Asia and the Pacific is vested in a Council made up of elected individual members of the University of Sydney, the business community and relevant organisations.
The Council is headed by a chairperson who preside over four Council meetings annually. An Executive Committee comprising of selected members of the Council oversees the strategic direction of RIAP. The Director of RIAP is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor on the recommendation of Council for a period not exceeding 5 years, and who is eligible for reappointment.
The Director reports to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (International). In 2006, the Director of RIAP is expected to be a joint appointment, holding the position of PVC International and equally responsible for the development and implementation of the University's internationalisation strategy.
The Director is responsible for the management of RIAP and is assisted by a Deputy Director and a team of professional program developers, managers and coordinators.
