Re-Writing the Nation: The Politics of Indonesian History since Suharto
Country: Indonesia Field: History Year: 2004 Chief Researcher: Adrian Vickers Faculty: Faculty of Arts Funder: Australian Research Council (ARC) Partner(s): (none) Description: In Indonesia's New Order era under President Suharto, history served a direct propaganda role in state ideology. As yet no replacement state ideology has been formulated by the three subsequent governments. In the absence of a clear direction for the state, Islamic, nationalist and other groups jockey for power. By examining the politics of historical debates in Indonesia since 1998, this project analyses processes by which political legitimacy is being reshaped by the contending groups in Indonesia. The project will advance the understanding both of the public uses of history and of the unstable nature of Indonesian political discourse Further details: Researcher Information

Diseases of crops in the central provinces of Vietnam- diagnosis, extension and control
Country: Vietnam Field: Agriculture Year: 2005-2008 Chief Researcher: Prof Lester Burgess, Dr Edward Liew Faculty: Faculty of Agriculture Funder: ACIAR Partner(s): Royal Botanic Gardens, Australia; Hanoi Agricultural University, Vietnam; Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, Vietnam; Quang Nam Provincial Plant Protection Sub-Department, Vietnam; Research Centre for Medicinal Plants, Vietnam; Nghe An Provincial Description: Diseases of fruits and vegetables affect a number of crops in Vietnam, including coffee, pepper, watermelon, sugar, citrus and durian. All are important crops in the central provinces of Quang Nam, Quang Tri and Hue. Soilborne fungal agents are a main cause of diseases spreading in all three provinces. Earlier ACIAR-supported research with the Hanoi Agricultural University (HAU) built molecular diagnostic capacity. As yet this capacity has not been replicated at the provincial level, limiting survey, diagnostic and control expertise. This research will focus on building capacity in diagnosis of soilborne diseases in the three central provinces, all having important soil fungal problems. Further details: Project Website

Power and Rule in the Mekong Basin: The Dynamics of 'Hard' and 'Soft' Law in International Watercourse Governance
Country: Vietnam Field: Law Year: 2008 Chief Researcher: Dr Fleur Johns Faculty: Faculty of Law Funder: Unknown Partner(s): (none) Description: Effective, responsive, coordinated governance is vital to maintenance of the fragile eco-system of the Mekong River Basin and the social, economic and political networks that depend upon its flourishing. Development of such a governance regime tailored to the field in question has, however, been impeded by the absence of any rigorous, critical mapping of the normative infrastructure of the Mekong River Basin, particularly its transnational 'soft law' dimensions. This project seeks to connect intra-regional developments in the law and policy of transboundary water governance with the broader tendencies and tensions within the international legal order by which they are, in part, informed.
