Australian New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) Codes

Using ANZSIC classifications

At the divisional level the main purpose is to provide a limited number of categories which will provide a broad overall picture of the economy and hence be suitable for publication in summary tables in official statistics. There are 17 divisions within the ANZSIC each identified by an alphabetical character.

A Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing
B Mining
C Manufacturing
D Electricity, Gas and Water Supply
E Construction
F Wholesale Trade
G Retail Trade
H Accommodation, Cafes and Restaurants
I Transport and Storage
J Communication Services
K Finance and Insurance
L Property and Business Services
M Government Administration and Defence
N Education
O Health and Community Services
P Cultural and Recreational Services
Q Personal and Other Services

The subdivision, group and class levels provide increasingly detailed dissections of the broad categories.

About ANZSIC Codes

The Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) has been produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the New Zealand Department of Statistics for use in the collection and publication of statistics in the two countries.

It replaces the Australian Standard Industrial Classification (ASIC) and the New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (NZSIC). The development of the ANZSIC resulted from the need to improve comparability of industry statistics for Australia and New Zealand. International comparability has been enhanced by aligning the ANZSIC with the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC), Revision 3, wherever possible.

The ANZSIC has a structure comprising categories at four levels, namely Divisions (the broadest level), Subdivisions, Groups and Classes (the finest level).

Full deatils on ANZSIC codes can be found at the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
