1. Ethics and biosafety clearance and risk assessment
All applicants are strongly advised to submit requests for ethics and/or biosafety clearance to the relevant committee at the same time the application is submitted to the granting body. Applicants should bear in mind that, although clearances are normally granted at the first meeting of the committee after submission, it may take several months if the clearance application is found to be deficient or needs to be rewritten.
1.1 Human Ethics
The Human Ethics website provides comprehensive information on applying for human ethics clearance.
1.2 Animal Ethics
The Animal Ethics website provides comprehensive information on applying for animal ethics clearance.
1.3 Biosafety
Biosafety approval must be sought from the Recombinant DNA Monitoring Committee for research projects that involve recombinant DNA procedures. Some procedures may be exempt from the Guidelines for Large/Small Scale Genetic Manipulation Work (issued by GMAC); confirmation by the Committee is still required.
1.4 Risk assessment
Each research application which involves hazardous substances or conditions requires an assessment of the risk (to staff, students, environment) and implementation of appropriate hazard control measures (eg limited access, available information, training, procedures, signposting, shielding, protective apparel). An assessment and information sheet for each of these categories is available from the University's Risk Management Office, KO7, Tel: 9351 4335.
