HERDC Publication Categories

There are four publication types which are eligible for the HERDC collection:

Book – Authored Research (A1)

An A1 book is a substantial work of scholarship bound and offered for sale under the imprint of a recognised commercial press or publisher.

Eligibility

In order to be included as an A1, the book must meet the definitions of research and all of the following:

  • Be a major work of scholarship
  • Be offered for sale
  • Have an International Standard Book Number (ISBN)
  • Written entirely by a single author, or by joint authors who share responsiblity for the whole book
  • Has been published by a commerical publisher
  • The author must be affilated with the claiming institution

Types of books that may meet the criteria include:

  • Critical scholarly texts
  • New interpretations of historical events
  • New ideas or perspectives based on established research findings

Exclusions

The types of books that are unlikely to meet the criteria include:

  • Textbooks
  • Anthologies
  • Edited books
  • Creative works such as novels
  • Translations
  • Revisions/New editions

A1 Verification Requirements

To be included in the HERDC collection, PDF documentation of the following details are required for each entry:

  • Title page
  • Bibliographic details - ISBN, Publisher, all dates referring to copyright, publication and printing
  • Contributor information pages
  • Table of Contents
  • All introduction material - Preface, Foreword, acknowledgements and Introduction (in the absence of introductory material, please provide a full chapter from the book)
  • Evidence of the author's affiliation to USYD (contributor information pages from the publication when available)

Book Chapter – Commercial Publisher (B1)

A B1 book chapter is a contribution, consisting substantially of new material, to an edited compilation in which the material is subject to editorial scrutiny.

Eligibility

In order to be included as a B1, both the chapter and the book overall must meet the definitions of research and all of the following:

  • Be offered for sale
  • Have an International Standard Book Number (ISBN)
  • Written entirely by a single author, or by joint authors who share responsiblity for the whole book
  • Have been published by a commerical publisher
  • Have at least one author of the chapter affiliated with the University of Sydney

Types of books that may meet the criteria include:

  • A scholarly introduction of chapter length to an edited volume, where the content of the introduction reports research and makes a substantial contribution to a defined area of knowledge
  • A critical scholarly text of chapter length
  • Critical reviews of current research

Exclusions

The types of books that are unlikely to meet the criteria include:

  • textbooks
  • entries in reference books
  • anthologies
  • revisions of chapters in edited books
  • forewords
  • brief introductions/editorials
  • creative works such as collections of short stories
  • translations
  • appendices

B1 Verification Requirements

To be included in the HERDC collection, PDF documentation of the following details are required for each entry:

  • Title page
  • Bibliographic details - ISBN, Publisher, all dates referring to copyright, publication and printing
  • Contributor information pages
  • Table of Contents
  • All introduction material - Preface, Foreword, acknowledgements and Introduction (in the absence of introductory material, please provide a full chapter from the book)
  • A copy of the full chapter being claimed
  • Evidence of the author's affiliation to USYD (contributor information pages from the publication when available)
  • If claiming a new chapter in a revised edition, the table of contents of ALL previous editions is required. If the there is a chapter with the same title in previous editions, we will also need a copy of that chapter to show the new chapter is substantially different.

Journal Article – Refereed, Scholarly Journal (C1)

A C1 journal article is a substantial work of scholarship published in a scholarly journal following a formal process of peer review.

Eligibility

In order to be included as a C1, the journal article must meet the definitions of research and all of the following:

  • Be published in a scholarly journal
  • Have been peer reviewed
  • Have an International Standard Serial Number (ISSN)
  • Have at least one author affiliated with the University of Sydney

The types of journal articles that may meet the criteria include:

  • critical scholarly texts which appear in article form
  • articles reviewing multiple works or an entire field of research
  • articles in journals which are targeted to both scholars and professionals
  • commentaries and communications of original research
  • research notes
  • invited papers in journals

Exclusions

The types of journal articles that are unlikely to meet the criteria include:

  • Letters to the Editor
  • Case studies
  • Editorials
  • Book reviews
  • Articles designed to inform practitioners on existing knowledge in a professional field
  • Articles in newspapers and popular magazines
  • Brief commentaries and communications of original research
  • Reviews of art exhibitions, concerts, theatre productions

C1 Verification Requirements

To be included in the HERDC collection, PDF documentation of the following details are required for each entry:

  • A copy of the full article
  • Proof of peer review
  • Bibliographic Details - journal volume/issue and dates referring to copyright, publication and printing
  • Evidence of the author's affiliation to USYD

Conference Publication – Full Paper Refereed (E1)

An E1 conference publication is a paper published in full which has been peer reviewed and presented at a conference, workshop or seminar of national or international significance.

Eligibility

In order to be included as an E1, the conference publication must meet the definitions of research and all of the following:

  • Be published in full in any of the following formats; a volume of proceedings, a special edition of a journal, a normal issue of a journal, a book or a monograph, CD Rom or conference/organisation website
  • The full paper must be peer reviewed
  • Be presented at a conference, workshop or seminar of national or international significance
  • Have at least one author affiliated with the University of Sydney
  • A conference paper can be counted once only, even if published in more than one format, e.g. if a conference paper is later published in a special issue of a journal, it can not be claimed in this journal if it was first published in a separate proceedings

Keynote addresses may be included where all other papers for the conference are peer reviewed, and evidence is provided both of the keynote status of the address (eg. contents page) and of the other contributions to the conference being peer reviewed

Exclusions

The types of conference publications that are unlikely to meet the criteria include:

  • Papers that appear only in a volume handed out to conference participants
  • Conferences where only an abstract was published, not a full-paper

Conference papers published in books that meet all the criteria for category B1, as well as E1, or in journals that meet all the criteria for category C1, as well as E1, may be counted in either category but not both.

E1 Verification Requirements

To be included in the HERDC collection, PDF documentation of the following details are required for each entry:

  • Title page (from the published Proceedings)
  • Bibliographic details - ISBN or ISSN, Publisher, all dates referring to copyright, publication and printing (from the published Proceedings)
  • Table of Contents (from the published Proceedings)
  • All introduction material - Preface, foreword and welcome messages (from the published Proceedings when available otherwise can supplement with information from the conference website when no introduction material is available in the publication)
  • A copy of the full article, as published, i.e. not an author’s copy (from the published Proceedings)
  • Proof of peer review
  • Proof of the National or International significance of the conference
  • Evidence of the author's affiliation to USYD
  • Conference Program, showing the dates and times each paper was presented
