May, 2008
Lindy Lee

Sydney College of the Arts senior lecturer, Dr Lindy Lee will feature on this months ABC, Artscape – Artists at Work. Lee is considered as one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, having exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. Since 1986 Lee has been exhibiting at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery. She was the Deputy Chair of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council, from 1998 – 2002.

Lee, a Zen Buddhist, explores personal issues of identity, including her place in Australia and the universe through her art practice. Her parents, both Chinese immigrants, and their place in Australian society, have influenced her art practice over the past thirty years. Lee uses splashes of dark wax across photocopies of her family and Buddha, using duplication and strong specific colours that have a strong associative power for her and act as an expression of her Zen approach.

The documentary on Artscape, will follow Lee as she works on a project for the Sydney Zen Centre, including paintings for her Zen teachers and banners for the temple. Lee’s work will feature on ABC1 Tuesday 20 May at 10pm and ABC2 Sunday 25 May at 7pm.
