New Student Galleries at SCA

Two new student galleries are now operating at SCA. The rather Gothically titled Deadspace Gallery and the Abattoir will begin with regular exhibitions this month, and will provide SCA students with the chance to exhibit their work regularly in a supportive and experimental student environment.
Deadspace is housed in the freestanding building in front of the library carpark, outside the main wall of the Kirkbride building. It had its first show in June, with Laura McLean from printmedia showing the potential of the space to hold popular, high quality shows. The first show of Semester 2 will open on Friday 22 August at 5pm. It will include projected photography and video by sculpture student Danny Kennedy, with sound by Matt Yeldham from the same studio. The first directors, Peter Dixon and Adam Varnhed from sculpture, intend to make the exhibition openings a regular social event on the student calendar, with openings weekly or fortnightly throughout the semester.
The Abattoir gallery will be in the canteen common room. Its first show will be an exhibition of historical posters from the University of Sydney’s SRC (Students Representative Council) to coincide with SRC week. It opens on Friday 15 August. With the SRC celebrating its 80th birthday in 2008, the posters will give a glimpse of the powerful political campaigns run by Sydney University students over the decades. The directors are first year students Luke Calarco and Meg O’Shea.
The galleries are run by SCASS (the Sydney College of the Arts Student Society). For further information, enquiries and exhibition proposals please contact
