SCA Graduate Sean Lowry Celebrates International Music Success

Celebrity Drug Disasters, a production partnership between Sydney College of the Arts graduate Dr Sean Lowry and Rob Taylor, have secured a soundtrack commission for an international promotional trailer release for the film 'What Happens in Vegas'. The film, directed by Tom Vaughan, stars such Hollywood heavyweights as Cameron Diaz, Ashton Kutcher and Queen Latifa.
Lowry is a practicing visual artist, theoretician and a producer of electronic music. His model of “subliminal appropriation” forms the cornerstone of both his visual art research and commercial music production. After achieving considerable commercial chart success in Australia, Asia and North America during the 1990s with electronic rock band Def FX, he later returned to SCA to complete his PhD in 2003. The commercial application of ideas from his PhD dissertation, 'The After-Party: The Retreat and Concealment of Strategic Appropriation in Contemporary Art’ led to the commercial success of his musical production Celebrity Drug Disasters. Lowry's recent work looks at contemporary attitudes to cultural and artistic production in the wake of postmodernism.
Among his recent successes, Lowry was also announced the University of Newcastle’s 2007 ‘Lecturer of the Year’. Selected by his fellow staff and students for this prestigious award, that saw over 2000 lecturers from Universities across Australia receive nominations.
