2008 Sydney Underground Film Festival

In 2007 the Sydney Underground Film Festival delivered four nights of subversive, experimental, visual and aural pleasure and presented highly entertaining and enlightening lectures by historic experimental filmmakers, Arthur and Corinne Cantrill, Megan Spencer, and Jack Sargeant at Sydney College of the Arts. The festival and the lectures series are happening once again in 2008 with the four night festival from 11 – 14 at The Factory Theatre, Enmore and the SUFF Lecture Series at Sydney College of the Arts the week after from 16 – 19 September 2008.

The Director of the Sydney Underground Film Festival is Stefan Popescu, a recent PhD Graduate from SCA and now a part-time academic in the Film and Digital Art Department. Stefan’s PhD research culminated into the thesis “Material Affects: The Body-Language of Film” with an accompanying feature film entitled, “Rosebery 7470”, which you’ll find in the SCA Library.

Stefan and the team behind the Sydney Underground Film Festival are dedicated to nurturing an alternative film culture through the promotion of independent / arthouse / experimental films and wants to support filmmakers who operate outside established film industry infrastructures, by providing a platform for exhibition, exposure and critical discussion.

In 2007, the festival screened over 100 impressive films including significant works by renowned filmmakers such as David Lynch, Martha Colburn, Virgil Widrich, Bill Morrison, Abigail Child, Dirk De Bruyn, and historic UBU filmmakers Albie Thoms, David Perry, and Paul Winkler and outstanding films by entrants from Australia and around the world.

The festival is currently calling for entries (and accepts films of any length, genre or content) for the 2008 festival. The regular deadline closes 30 May and the late deadline closes 13 June. Note: current students get discounted fees plus all entrants receive a further $5 off if they send a rejection letter with their entry. Please check the website for all details on how to enter.
