Areas of practice

Tanya Peterson’s practice encompasses art making, writing and criticism. She has a strong interest in Conceptual Art of the 1960/70s and more generally in the production of failure. In loose connection to these themes she is currently researching the conceptual dynamics between photography, sculpture and the readymade gesture. As part of this research she will curate In Advance, an exhibition of contemporary art at UTS gallery in April 2008. She also has an ongoing interest in the relationship between photography, trauma and memory. At the forthcoming 19th American Literature Association conference, she will present a paper exploring these concerns through an analysis of Don Delillo’s novel, Falling Man (2007).

In conjunction with an exhibition profile spanning ten years, she has published extensively since 2000. She has been a co-director of First Draft Gallery (1998-2000) and Managing Editor for Rosemary Laing: A Survey, 1995-2002 (Sydney: Gitte Weise Gallery, 2003). She has contributed to journals such as Photofile, Eyeline, Art & Australia, runway and Broadsheet, and written numerous essays on contemporary art for a variety of local and international galleries. Forthcoming texts for 2008 include: “Clear Present Danger”, through Artspace, Sydney, and “Hallucinations” through CACSA, Adelaide.
