Research

Simone Douglas has been exhibiting since the late 1980s and works across photomedia, video and installation. She has also curated numerous exhibitions.

Her photographs have been exhibited at and are held in numerous collections including the V&A Museum, London, the Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney and the National Gallery Of Victoria. In addition they have also been exhibited at the Photographers Gallery, London, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and the Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney, among others. She was project director and curator for Picture Sydney: landmarks of a new generation at the Australian Museum; has been a guest scholar at Köln International School of Design; initiated the international art and design collective Conjecture and served as a Director at firstdraft Gallery, Sydney.

The key area of her recent research is to develop a contemporary understanding of, and visual response to, the photographic in relation to the sublime, excess and immateriality. Douglas’s research takes the knowledge and certainty as expressed in historic and contemporary readings of the photographic as a counterpoint to her visual work, as it seeks to explore a slippage in visual certainty in the photographic image. It is a re-evaluation of the 'sublime' and the visual uncertainty of the photographic.

Douglas currently lectures at Parsons the New School of Design, New School University, New York in the graduate and undergraduate programs.

Simone Douglas is represented by Artereal in Sydney, and Vassie Galleries in Amsterdam.
