School Students

If you are currently in high school and you are applying to The University of Sydney there are many scholarships and bursaries that can help you to meet some of the costs associated with starting at university.

We encourage final year high school students to apply for University of Sydney Scholarships for school leavers. These scholarships are awarded to students who have achieved excellent academic results during high school and who have participated widely in extra-curricular activities such as sport, community service or leadership opportunities.

University of Sydney scholarship recipients use their scholarship payments to help with accommodation, textbooks, computers and other living costs.

The University of Sydney also offers Access scholarships for students who have achieved excellent results at high school and who have overcome a demonstrated disadvantage, whether it be financial hardship or a documented disability. We recommend that all eligible students apply for the Access scholarship (applications are made through UAC). There are also new Commonwealth Scholarships available for future university students.

Please note that scholarships for school leavers must be applied for in August/September of your final year of high school. Whilst your final results will not as yet be available, you must apply early in order to declare your intention of attending university. It is for this reason we recommend all students who have done well at high school apply for every scholarship for which they are eligible to ensure that they have the best chances at pursuing tertiary education.

Taking a Gap Year?

Many students choose to take a gap year between finishing school and starting university. If you are thinking about taking a gap year make sure you don’t miss out on applying for a University of Sydney Scholarship. You must apply while you are still at school. If you are offered a University of Sydney Scholarship you may defer it for one year, but no applications will be accepted from students currently on a gap year.
