All your own work

A guide to avoiding plagiarism, cheating and copying so that your work is all your own

No-one commences their studies with an intent to plagiarise and yet many people do, for a variety of reasons. Some students plagiarise because they don’t fully understand what plagiarism is, why it is wrong and how it can be avoided. Other students may choose to plagiarise, because of time or other pressures or because they have done it once and gotten away with it.

Whatever the reason, understanding what plagiarism and proper referencing techniques are will not only result in the production of better, more meaningful assessment tasks, it will also lead to the satisfying notion that it is “all your own work”.

This guide is intended as a useful resource for students who are unsure about what constitutes plagiarism and what the University’s expectations are in relation to referencing, copying and cutting and pasting. The guide also explains the University’s policies on plagiarism and describes the penalties which might apply to those students who are found to have deliberately plagiarised. There are also a number of links to other useful sites and tools.
