Reception of Delegates and Presentation of Addresses, 30 September 1902

The Reception of Delegates and Presentation of Addresses was held in the Great Hall of the University at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, 30 September 1902.

Program

His Excellency the Governor, Vice-Admiral Sir Harry Holdsworth Rawson, K.C.B., was received on his arrival by a guard of honour consisting of fifty rank and file of the University Volunteer Corps, under the command of Captain Simpson.

At 2.30 p.m., an Organ Recital was given in the Great Hall by the University organist, Mr Arthur R. Mote, Esq., B.A.. The Recital comprised:

  1. Concert Overture in C minor Hollins
  2. University Jubilee March Kathleen Mayer - Dedicated to the Chancellor.
  3. Melody in F Bubinstein
  4. Offertoire de Ste. Cecile, No. 2 Orison
  5. Introduction and Fuga Hewlett
  6. Chant sans Paroles, Op. 2, No. 3 Tschatkowsky
  7. Commemoration March, Op. 37 A. B. Mote - Dedicated to the Chancellor.
  8. March, Die Meistersinger Wagner

At 3 p.m. His Excellency entered the Great Hall, accompanied by the Chancellor, the Honourable Sir Normand MacLaurin, and preceded by a procession consisting of the members of Professorial Staff, the visiting Delegates, and the Fellows of the Senate, dressed in their academic robes, starting from the main entrance ... List of names.

The academic procession was accompanied by a march played on the organ.

The ceremony was presided over by the Chancellor, who opened the proceedings by delivering an address ... Address.

Mr. H. E. Barff, the Registrar, then read the names of the visiting delegates, who were severally presented by the Chancellor to His Excellency, Sir Harry Rawson ... delegates.

Letters of congratulation were then acknowledged from a large number of universities in all parts of the world ... more.

Addresses were then delivered by several of the delegates:

  • Professor T. G. Tucker - delegate from the University of Melbourne ... Address
  • Professor Baldwin Spencer - delegate of Oxford University, and Owen's College, Manchester ... Address
  • Sir Samuel Griffith - Chief Justice and Lieutenant-Governor of Queensland ... Address
  • Mr. Alexander Oliver - President of the Land Appeal Court, and one of the earliest students of the University ... Aaddress

At the call of the Chancellor, three cheers were given for His Majesty, King Edward VII and for Queen Alexandra.

Cheers were also given for His Excellency and Lady Rawson; for the Universities; and for Sir Normand MacLaurin.

The Students sang " Gaudeamus Igitur" with great heartiness, to the organ accompaniment of Mr. A. R. Mote; and the proceedings terminated with the National Anthem.
