The Wentworth Medal was established in 1854 by a gift from W. C. Wentworth, the interest to be applied to the award of a medal as a reward for the best essay in English prose on a topic of general interest to all students. A prize of $6,250 now supplements the Medal. The competition for the Medal is open to all students currently enrolled at the University, except for previous winners of the Wentworth Medal. The essay topic and the examiners of the essay are decided by a Committee consisting of the Chair of the Academic Board, the Deans of the Faculties of Arts, Economics and Law and the Registrar, with power to coopt.
