After a brief introduction from Associate Professor Peter McCallum, Deputy Chair of the Academic Board and Chair of the Judging Panel, the Chancellor also presented the 2008 Wentworth Medal to two of the three recipients - Lance Richardson and Mark Steven - for their essays on the topic of ‘Climate change – a way forward’ . The third recipient, Robyn Stuart, was unable to attend.
Lance is in his third year of a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree majoring in English Literature and Anthropology. Mark has just completed joint-Honours in English and Cultural Studies and is about to commence a PhD in Cultural Studies.
The Wentworth Medal was established in 1854 by a gift from W. C. Wentworth, the interest to be applied to the award of a medal as a reward for the best essay in English prose on a topic of general interest to all students. A prize of $7,000 now supplements the Medal. The competition for the Medal is open to all students currently enrolled at the University, except for previous winners of the Wentworth Medal. The essay topic and the examiners of the essay are decided by a Committee consisting of the Chair of the Academic Board, the Deans of the Faculties of Arts, Economics and Law and the Registrar, with power to coopt.
