Dates and times

Dates should be written in text as 23 June 2002, not 23rd June, 2002 or June 23, 2002.

Years should be written as:

  • 1973–76 for spans of years within the same decade
  • 1973–82 for spans of years within the one century
  • 1873–2000 for spans embracing two or more centuries
  • 1970s does NOT require an apostrophe before the 's'.

Times should be written in text as 10am, 6.30pm, 12 noon (full stop, no space between number and abbreviation except for 12 noon).

When referring to decades, you should use an initial apostrophe (that is, “in the ’70s”). It is incorrect to add an apostrophe before the ‘s’.

When referring to centuries, spell out the first to the ninth (that is, eighth century but 18th century).
