Common mistakes

University-related:

  • Use the term Quadrangle not Main Quadrangle – we only have one.
  • Check the spelling of building names. Commonly misspelt names include MacLaurin Hall, Edgeworth David, Merewether, Storie Dixon, Heydon-Laurence and John Woolley.
  • Use international (lower case ‘i’) students not International students.

General examples:

  • a/an – ‘a’ is used before words that start with a consonant sound, including some that start with the letter h (hotel, historic). ‘An’ preceeds words that start with a vowel sound.
  • its is the possessive pronoun; it’s is a shortened version of ‘it is’
  • among not amongst in almost all cases
  • barbecue not barbeque
  • enrol, enrolment, enrolling and enrolled, not variations of same
  • disinterested means unbiased while uninterested means indifferent
  • complimentary means free or flattering while complementary means completing
