Common mistakes
University-related:
- Use the term Quadrangle not Main Quadrangle we only have one.
- Check the spelling of building names. Commonly misspelt names include MacLaurin Hall, Edgeworth David, Merewether, Storie Dixon, Heydon-Laurence and John Woolley.
- Use international (lower case i) students not International students.
General examples:
- a/an – a is used before words that start with a consonant sound, including some that start with the letter h (hotel, historic). An preceeds words that start with a vowel sound.
- its is the possessive pronoun; its is a shortened version of it is
- among not amongst in almost all cases
- barbecue not barbeque
- enrol, enrolment, enrolling and enrolled, not variations of same
- disinterested means unbiased while uninterested means indifferent
- complimentary means free or flattering while complementary means completing
