Your responsibilities
Whether by post or email, you must read all correspondence from the University and respond promptly. Failure to correctly maintain your enrolment, or respond to correspondence as directed, may lead to unnecessary and substantial financial and/or academic liability.
What correspondence will I receive, and when?
When you accepted your offer, you were issued with a University of Sydney email address that you access using your UniKey login name and password.
The University will use this email address to send you essential information. It is your responsibility to check your University address regularly. If this is not your primary email address, we recommend you place an automatic forward on your emails to an address that you check daily. You should do the same with any additional email addresses you are given as part of the teaching requirements of your course.
I have forgotten my UniKey login and password.
Where do I access my email account?
How do I forward my emails from my uni account
You must ensure that your postal address details are up to date at all times as this is a primary contact point for official University communications. If you do not, you may be disadvantaged.
How do I update my details?
You may record up to three addresses on file.
What addresses should I provide?
It is your responsibility to ensure that your enrolment is correct by the census date for each semester. You will not be able to alter any errors after these dates.
In accordance with the Higher Education Support Act (2003), it is an offence for the University to alter your record beyond these dates except in clearly defined exceptional circumstances. Ignorance of the census date is not an exceptional circumstance.
To assist you with the maintenance of your enrolment the University provides you with a Confirmation of Enrolment immediately to your nominated correspondence address after your enrolment and after any and every variation to your enrolment. Contact the Student Centre if you’re expecting a confirmation and it has not arrived.
What is the census date?
If you are a Commonwealth supported student, either deferring, paying upfront with a discount or paying upfront without a discount, or a local fee-paying students who is deferring your fees to the tax system through FEE-HELP, you are advised to stay abreast of Commonwealth legislation pertaining to these schemes.
Visit www.goingtouni.gov.au or pick up a brochure at either the Camperdown or Cumberland Student Centres.
If you are a Commonwealth supported student you will receive an electronic Commonwealth Assistance Notice (eCAN) shortly after each census date relevant to your enrolment.
You are given a short period of time to check the details and contact the Student Centre if there are any errors. It is essential that you do this within the timeframe or you risk academic and financial penalty.
What is an eCAN and what do I do if I find an error?
If you do not wish to receive your Commonwealth Assistance Notice electronically, you are required to write to the Director of the Student Centre, briefly outlining your reasons. Should the Director grant an exemption from electronic delivery, a copy of the Notice will be mailed to you at your registered postal address.
Send request to:
Director
Student Centre
Carslaw Building F07
The University of Sydney, NSW 2006.
Note that emailed requests will not be considered
Changes requested after these dates will not be approved unless special circumstances apply. Such circumstances will, in all cases, be events considered beyond the control of the student. Ignorance of these requirements cannot be considered a special circumstance.
To satisfy the workload requirements for your AUSTUDY/Youth Allowance eligibility your enrolment in a semester must be full time. To be full time your combined unit of study weights must be equal to, or greater than, 0.375 (usually 18 credit points). This value is reproduced in many of the documents which will be mailed to you throughout the year and appears in numerous locations throughout the online facilities available to you.
If your combined unit of study weighting in a semester is below 0.375, and you are not eligible for a concession, any AUSTUDY/Youth Allowance you receive will be an overpayment. You are advised to review your combined unit of study weighting in a semester when discontinuing units of study or if you are granted exemptions.
Am I eligible for a concession?
Under special circumstances you may be eligible for a concession to this requirement. You should seek advice from the Student Representative Council (SRC) welfare staff about this before applying.
Your use of information and communication technology (ICT) resources of the University is subject to the Information and Communication Technology Resources Policy of The University of Sydney. You must abide by the conditions of use.
You must read and abide by the code of conduct for students.
