Mental and Emotional Wellbeing

Can you think of an occasion or situation which left you feeling shaken or insecure? Losing someone close, for example, or making a decision which led to a negative outcome.

How did you recover from the experience? Does it still affect you? What skills do you possess to help you get through stressful situations? In light of your answer to these questions, how mentally or emotionally ‘well’ do you feel you are?

Being in a state of mental and emotional wellbeing means you have the resilience to effectively work through unexpected or challenging situations. That is, you have the ability to recover, and regain (or even gain for the first time) a sense of stability and security.

Being resilient helps you see that while you may be upset or aspects of your life seem out of control at a particular time, these feelings don't have to be long term. By seeing situations as temporary, you will experience, rather than suffer from, challenging situations.

Unfortunately, we are not born with the ability to be resilient. It is a learned skill. Seeking information from this website, the Counselling Service or other resources is a step in the right direction.
