Financial Assistance Office 2009 Advertised Bursaries

The information for 2009 Advertised Bursaries is now available below.

The University offers a number of bursaries and scholarships for award to full-time local undergraduate students. Some are open to students in all faculties, others in a particular faculty. Most are awarded for one year only but some are renewable year by year as outlined in each entry.

The following list is not exhaustive. It includes only those bursaries and scholarships administered by the Financial Assistance Office which require separate application. Students who apply for financial assistance are considered for other bursary awards as part of that process but when there is a closing date (as with bursaries listed below) students must ensure that they apply before that date.

Please note that bursary assistance is intended to cover essential living and study related expenses. Bursary Assistance will not be provided under any circumstances to cover the cost of overseas travel.

For information about other scholarships, bursaries and prizes please contact the Scholarships and Prizes Office and Faculty Offices. Please note also that residential colleges at the University offer scholarships and bursaries to their residents. Enquiries should be directed to the college concerned.

Unless otherwise indicated, all of the bursaries and scholarships administered by the Financial Assistance Office are awarded on both financial need and academic merit. Academic merit means average marks at a credit level or higher, gained in courses at this university, with some exceptions e.g. the bursaries available for award to first year students are based on the UAI.

Please note that applications received after the closing date will not be considered and that all bursaries and scholarships are offered subject to funding being available.

Applicants are required to complete an application form and submit the form to the Financial Assistance Office by the closing date.

Indigenous Australian students

Please note: In order to be considered for the following bursaries applicants must provide the following:

1. A letter of support from a relevant community organisation such as a land council, legal or medical service,

and

2. An affirmation/statutory declaration stating self-identification as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander

Note: Proof of recipt of Abstudy will not be accepted as proof of Aboriginality unless accompanied by the above documents.

Bernard Lee Scholarship for Indigenous Australian Students

This Scholarship was established in 2004 by a bequest from Mr Bernard Lee who died in 1997. To be considered for this award applicants must be an Indigenous Australian student aged less than 35 years, be enrolled in a degree course and making satisfactory progress. Value: $5000. In 2009 up to 5 awards may be made.

Robert Flloyd Marshall & Essen Marshall Scholarship

Established in 2005, the purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to full-time undergraduate Indigenous Australian students who are enrolled in degree courses, making satisfactory progress, and who are in financial need. Value: up to $2000. In 2009 up to 13 awards may be made.

Poppy Harris Bursary

Established in 2005 the purpose of this bursary is to provide financial assistance to full-time undergraduate Indigenous Australian students who are enrolled in degree courses, making satisfactory progress, and who are in financial need. Value: up to $1000. In 2009 up to 2 awards may be made.

Alice Mary Wingrove Bursary

These bursaries are available to assist Aboriginal students enrolled in any faculty of the University of Sydney. Value: $300 each. In 2009 up to 2 awards may be made. (Please note you must be enrolled in a degree course to be considered for this award.)

Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship

These scholarships are available for full-time study towards a degree or diploma at the University of Sydney, or for secondary education leading to eligibility for consideration for admission to the University of Sydney, or for education at another institution of tertiary education approved by the committee. The value of the scholarship will be determined in relation to the requirements of the successful applicants and the amount available for award. In 2009 up to 4 awards may be made.

A P Elkin Fund for the Assistance of Aboriginal Education

The fund assists persons of Aboriginal descent who are undertaking tertiary studies. The fund will be used to make grants for special purposes. Preference will be given to persons enrolled at the University of Sydney but students at other institutions of tertiary education may be assisted. The grants are awarded from the annual income of the fund on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Anthropology and the Registrar. In 2009 1 award will be made. (Please note you must be enrolled in a degree course to be considered for this award.)

Duncan Fund

Grants from this fund may be made to further the education of Aboriginal women and men, exclusively for students enrolled for the Diploma of Education (Aboriginal).
The value of each grant may be up to $100. In 2009 up to 8 awards may be made. (Please note you must be enrolled in the Diploma of Education (Aboriginal) to be considered for this award.)

University of Sydney First Year Bursary 2009

2009 Applications

The University of Sydney First Year Bursary will be offered to eligible first year students to help with establishment costs at university. Students will be eligible to apply if they are enrolled full-time; are in receipt of Youth Allowance, Austudy or any other Centrelink Benefit; and can demonstrate financial need due to one or more of the following: low socio economic status, rural or isolated background, living away from home or a disability. Value: $2000. In Semester 2009 up to 170 awards may be made.

Separate application forms need to be submitted and are available from the Financial Assistance Office or can be downloaded by following the link below.

Please note that you will need to attach confirmation of your Centrelink benefit with your application. You will have received a “Grant Letter” from Centrelink confirming your payment and this is acceptable.

Alternatively you can contact Centrelink and request an “Income Statement” to be sent to you. This letter can be requested by calling Centrelink on 132 490, over the counter at a Centrelink office, or by visiting the Centrelink web-site,

and sending an email requesting that it be sent to you.

Please ensure that Centrelink has your current address details.

As the beginning of the year is Centrelink's busiest time, Centrelink has advised us that making a request by email is the quickest method in order to receive this information. If you need to call Centrelink the best time is between 8am - 10am. If you need to go into a Centrelink Office it is best to go early in the morning, offices open at 8 am.

Maurice Alexander Bursary

The Alexander Bursary is available for award to students whose parents are not resident in Sydney, based on financial need and academic merit. One bursary is available, valued at $500 per annum for three years, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Burdekin Bursary

The Burdekin Bursary is available for award to students whose parents are not resident in Sydney. Two new bursaries may be awarded each year. Value: $500 per annum for three years, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Robert Campbell Scholarship

The Robert Campbell Scholarship is awarded on financial need and academic merit (UAI 95.5+). The Scholarship is available for students enrolling in any faculty and is tenable for the duration of the degree being undertaken, provided that the holder satisfactorily passes course examinations. Value: $500. In 2009 up to 5 awards may be made.

Ann Carswell Bursary

Applications are invited from students enrolling in the first year of an Arts degree course after completing their HSC, who need financial assistance. Value: $500. In 2009 up to 2 awards may be made.

Awards for all faculties

The Ruth Marion Fardell Bursary

This bursary was established in 2007 by a donation from Miss Joyce Fardell in memory of her mother Ruth Marion Fardell.

This is a one year bursary available to full-time undergraduate students, who are permanent users of wheelchairs, who are in financial need, and are making satisfactory progress. Applicants are required to provide medical evidence, in the form of a letter from a doctor, that they are a permanent user of a wheelchair.

Value: $5000. In 2009 up to 2 awards may be made.

Bernard Lee Scholarship for the Blind

This Scholarship was established in 2004 by a bequest from Mr Bernard Lee who died in 1997. To be considered for this award applicants must be aged less than 35 years, be performing at a credit level or higher and eligible for, or in receipt of, the Disability Support Pension (Blind) or provide a letter of confirmation of blindness from the Royal Blind Society. Value: $5000. In 2009 up to 10 awards may be made.

Hunter-Baillie Bursaries

Available for award to undergraduates in any faculty who are sons of ministers of religion and in need of financial assistance. They may be awarded to students in their first year of enrolment. Value: up to $2000. In 2008 up to 10 awards may be made.

Gladys H Marks Memorial Bursary

This fund was established in 1971 from contributions following an appeal launched by the NSW Association of University Women Graduates, to honour the memory of Miss Gladys Marks, a co-founder of the Association. Originally used to fund loans to mature women students, the conditions were changed in 1996 with the consent of the Australian Federation of University Women, formerly the NSW Association of Women Graduates.

Five per cent of accumulated funds may be used each year to fund the Gladys H Marks Memorial Bursary, which may be awarded to a mature age (21 years or over) woman student enrolled in a course of study at the University of Sydney, who is making satisfactory academic progress and who needs financial assistance to continue her studies. Awards recommended by the Financial Assistance Officer are subject to approval by the Federation. Value: $600. In 2009 1 award will be made.

Shirbin Bursaries

Applications are invited from students enrolled in any faculty who are direct descendants of soldiers who served abroad with the Australian Imperial Forces in World War I, and who need financial assistance to continue their studies. Applicants need to demonstrate that they are eligible for this award. A statutory declaration, submitted with the application form, which gives the name and details of the soldier and the line of descent is acceptable. Value: $500. in 2009 up to 15 awards may be made.

Levey and Alexander Bursary

Applications are invited from recent male graduates in Arts, with preference given to Honours graduates, who are currently enrolled for professional degrees, especially those in Medicine, Law, Architecture, Surveying and Engineering, who need financial assistance to continue their studies. The bursary may be awarded only once to a student during their professional studies. Value: $1000. in 2009 up to 6 awards may be made.

Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning

Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning Students Bursary

Established in 2000 by a contribution from an anonymous donor, with ongoing funding provided by the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning Alumni Association.

The purpose of this bursary is to provide financial assistance to full time undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning who are in financial need. Value: up to $1000. In 2009 up to 5 awards may be made.

Faculty of Agriculture

John R Mercer Bursary

Special conditions: Available for award to one or more students enrolled in Animal Science subjects in years 3 or 4 of the BScAg, changed to the BAnimSc degree in 2001. Preference may be given to students with a demonstrable interest in the Animal Nutrition subject. Value: $1000 available for award each year. May be given as one or more bursaries.

Lady Galleghan Scholarships

This Scholarship was established in 2004 by a bequest from the Estate of the late Lady Persia Galleghan. Awarded annually to students enrolled in Australian and/or English Literature on the basis of financial need and academic performance. Preference will be given to students who have completed at least 16 senior credit points in English and/or Australian Literature. The Scholarships will be awarded on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of English in consultation with the Professors of Australian Literature and English Literature or their nominees. Value: up to $1000. In 2009 up to 17 awards may be made.

Badham Bursaries

Students enrolled in the Departments of Latin and/or Ancient Greek are invited to apply for a Badham Bursary. These bursaries are awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit attained in Latin and/or Ancient Greek courses at this university. Other things being equal, preference will be given to a student who is taking both Latin and Ancient Greek for the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Value: up to $2000. In 2009 up to 3 awards may be made.

Abbie Clancy Bursary

Established in 1993 by a donation from the Society of Women Writers NSW Inc, using funds bequeathed to them by Abbie Clancy. It is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Professor of Australian Literature to a candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the course Australian Literature IV Honours, who is under the age of 29. Preference given to a candidate writing an Honours thesis on an Australian woman writer. Value: $1000 +.

Fellowship of Australian Writers Bursary

Applications for this bursary are invited from candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Australian Literature Honours Course. The bursary is awarded on the recommendation of the Professor of Australian Literature to a student who demonstrates financial need and academic merit. Value: $1000.

Reverend C A White Bursary

(No closing date) This bursary is available for award to a Presbyterian undergraduate who has been accepted as a candidate for the ministry of the Presbyterian Church. Value: $500. In 2009 up to 7 awards may be made.

John Spencer Nolan Bursary

This bursary may be awarded to a student in the Faculty of Dentistry in any year, who needs financial assistance to meet student expenses. The bursary is awarded on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty. Value: $500. In 2009 up to 3 awards may be made.

Faculty of Engineering

J N Ellis Fund

Grants from this fund may be made to students in the Faculty of Engineering who need assistance with student expenses. Awarded on the recommendation of the Dean. Value: $500. In 2009 up to 2 awards may be made.

Faculty of Medicine Dean's Scholarships

The Dean's Scholarship Fund was established in 2007 to support students with the Faculty of Medicine.

In 2009, in recognition of the difficult economic climate, the Fund will award four new financial assistance scholarship to students enrolled in the University of Sydney Medical Program (USydMP), who are experiencing financial difficulty which impacts on their studies. Applicants must demonstrate that they are eligible for these scholarships and are making satisfactory academic progress. The scholarships shall be awarded by the Financial Assistance Office following the approval of the Director Student Administration & Support and in consultation with the Faculty of Medicine. Value: $5000 per scholarship.

Please note that students who have submitted their applications for USydMP Bursaries prior to Tuesday 7 April 2009 will be considered for these scholarships.

Babak Shahidi Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2009 by his family in his honour. The Babak Shahidi Memorial Scholarship is a one year scholarship available to a student enrolled in the University of Sydney Medical Program (USydMP), who is experiencing financial difficulties which may impact on their studies. The scholarship shalle be awarded by the Financial Assistance Office, following approval of the Director Student Administration & Support and in consultation with the Faculty of Medicine. Value $5000.

The Gaston Bauer Scholarship

The Medical Alumni Association Gaston Bauer Scholarship was established in 2004 to honour a founding member of the Medical Graduates' Association and prominent physician and cardiologist, Dr Gaston Bauer.

This is a one-year scholarship, available to students, enrolled in the University of Sydney Medical Program (USydMP), who are experiencing financial difficulty which impacts on their studies. Applicants must demonstrate that they are eligible for this award and that they are making satisfactory academic progress. This scholarship shall be awarded by the Financial Assistance Office following the approval of the Director Student Administration & Support and consultation with the Medical Alumni Association. Value: $5,000.

The Dorothy Greening Scholarship

The Medical Alumni Association Billie Greening Scholarship was established in 2007 to honour the commitment to the wellbeing of medical students by Dr Billie Greening and alumnus of the University of Sydney. Dr Greening experienced financial challenges herself whilst studying.

The innaugral 2009 scholarship is a long time commitment to students and is available to students enrolled in the University of Sydney Medical Program, who are experiencing financial difficulty which impacts on their studies. Applicants must demonstrate that they are eligible for this award and are making satisfactory academic progress. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Financial Assistance following the approval of the Director Student Administration & Support in consultation with the Medical Alumni Asscociation. Value: $5,000.

The Dubbo Medical Society Scholarship

The Dubbo Medical Society Scholarship was established in 2005 following an offer of an annual donation by the Dubbo Medical Society.

This is a one-year scholarship, available to students from a rural background, preferably from but not essentially from the Dubbo area, who are enrolled in Stage 3 or Stage 4 of the University of Sydney Medical Program (USydMP), who choose to undertake eight weeks of the ICA and/or Rotation terms at Dubbo, and are in financial need. Applicants must demonstrate that they are eligible for this award and that they are making satisfactory academic progress. This scholarship shall be awarded by the Financial Assistance Office following the approval of the Director Student Administration & Support and consultation with the Medical Alumni Association. Value: $5,000.

The Professor John Beveridge Scholarship

Established in 2005 by Dr David Smith, a medical graduate of the University of Sydney, in memory of Professor John Beveridge, a prominent paediatrician who was instrumental in the development of Sydney Children's Hospital.

This is a one-year scholarship, available to students, enrolled in the University of Sydney Medical Program(USydMP), who are experiencing financial difficulty which impact on their studies. Applicants must demonstrate that they are eligible for this award and that they are making satisfactory academic progress. This scholarship shall be awarded by the Financial Assistance Office following the approval of the Director Student Administration & Support and consultation with the Medical Alumni Association. Value: $5,000. Please note that this scholarship may not be awarded to an applicant who is in receipt of another award of equal or higher value.

The Sheila Nicholas Scholarship

Established in 2006 by a donation from The Medical Alumni Association to honour Mrs Sheila Nicholas ('Mrs Nic') who was the mainstay of the Council of the University of Sydney Medical Society. Mrs Nic not only managed the Society's complex affairs, including its fledgling textbook scheme, she was much loved by thousands of medical students and highly respected by staff in the Faculty of Medicine. She died in 2004 at the age of 89.

This is a one-year scholarship available to students enrolled in the University of Sydney Medical Program(USydMP), who are experiencing financial difficulty which impact on their studies. Applicants must demonstrate that they are eligible for this award and that they are making satisfactory academic progress. This scholarship shall be awarded by the Financial Assistance Office following the approval of the Director Student Administration & Support and consultation with the Medical Alumni Association. Value: $5,000.

Lily Lonnie Boot Bursary

Applications are invited from undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculties of Medicine or Science who are supporting themselves while studying for their degrees and who need assistance with student expenses. The awards are valued at $1000 and in 2009 up to 3 awards may be made.

Norman John Dunlop Bursary

These bursaries are available to undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculties of Medicine and Science who require financial assistance to meet student expenses, have demonstrated academic merit, and are of British parentage and Protestant faith. They are awarded on the recommendation of the Dean of the relevant faculty. Awards are valued at up to $3000 and up to 21 awards may be made.

E M (Mary) Gilder Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1997 by a donation from Dorothy Gilder in memory of her sister, Dr Mary Gilder, who graduated BSc in 1943 and MBBS (Hons) in 1959, despite suffering the effects of polio from the age of six years. After completing a year's residency at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital she joined the University Department of Pathology as a teaching fellow, went on to become a lecturer in 1962 and then a Senior Lecturer in 1966. The scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in the University of Sydney Medical Program (USydMP) who demonstrates academic merit and financial need and is a citizen or permanent resident of Australia. The scholarship is tenable for one year but may be awarded more than once to the same applicant. Value: $5000.

Harold And Neta May Johnson Bursary

This bursary is available to assist students enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine who are of the Protestant faith and need financial assistance to meet student expenses. Value: $750.

Lily Lonnie Boot Bursary

Applications are invited from undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculties of Medicine or Science who are supporting themselves while studying for their degrees and who need assistance with student expenses. Value: $1,000. In 2009 up to 3 awards may be made.

Norman John Dunlop Bursary

These bursaries are available to undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculties of Medicine and Science who require financial assistance to meet student expenses, have demonstrated academic merit, and are of British parentage and Protestant faith. They are awarded on the recommendation of the Dean of the relevant faculty. Value: up to $3000. In 2009 up to 21 awards may be made.

Faculty of Veterinary Science

Dr Don Lamond Fund

Applications are invited from candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Science, other than first year students, who are in financial need and who have demonstrated aptitude for the course, academic merit and good conduct. The scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty. Value: $500. In 2009 up to 3 awards may be made.

Tomas Julius Szigethy Bursary

In 1995 the University received the sum of $100,000 from the estate of Miklos Tamas Szigethy to establish a bursary fund in memory of his late brother Tomas Julius Szigethy. The bursaries are to be awarded to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Veterinary Science who demonstrate financial need and academic merit. Six bursaries are usually awarded. Value: up to $1000. In 2009 up to 6 awards may be made.

John R Mercer Bursary

Special conditions: the bursary is available to one or more students enrolled in years 3, 4 or 5 in the BVSc degree or in a BScVet degree who have demonstrated sufficient academic merit and are in financial need. Preference may be given to students with a demonstrable interest in Animal Nutrition. Value: $1000 total amount available for award each year as one or more bursaries. Number of awards: 1 or more.
