Research Information

The Department offers research opportunities for graduate students to pursue higher degrees:

In addition a number of overseas medical graduates may be attached to The Department for periods of three to twelve months for research and clinical training.

Listed below is a brief outline of the postgraduate courses which may be undertaken in the Department of Obstetric and Gynaecology. All courses may be undertaken either part time or full time.

Master of Medicine (MMed)

Medical graduates of any recognised university from Australia or overseas may enrol. Candidature lasts from 1-3 years, by research and thesis.

Master of Science in Medicine (MScMed) - Part-Time or Full-Time Enrolment

The Masters Program

The fields of reproductive health sciences, reproductive medicine, and human genetics have expanded rapidly in recent years. For professionals working in these areas or for those graduates wishing to embark on a career in reproductive science and medicine or public health, these courses offer an opportunity to gain an insight into these rapidly growing disciplines. These courses are aimed at graduates in medicine, biology, veterinary science, medical laboratory science, nursing and related disciplines such as psychology or social work. Three streams of study are available: Clinical Science; Laboratory Science; and Genetics. Each stream leads to the degree of Master of Medicine or Master of Science in Medicine.

Aims and Objectives
The main aims of this program are to provide -
Up-to-date knowledge of the clinical and laboratory science and technological developments in reproduction and human genetics.
Insight into the social, ethical and public health aspects of these fields.
A firm basis for vocational training in these disciplines.

What Subjects are Offered?
The program contains a wide range of core subjects. In addition, candidates undertake a number of elective subjects that particularly interest them.

Clinical or laboratory attachments (for full-time candidates) and field visits (for all candidates) are included in the course

Teaching of the Masters Program
This Masters Program is undertaken by coursework, clinical or laboratory assignments and research treatise, with full-time or part-time enrolment.

Assessment is by written examination, oral presentations, written assignments, placement reports and the research treatise.

Timetable
Lectures and tutorials for both full-time and part-time candidates are held from 5.00 to 9.00pm usually on two nights per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) over four semesters (2 years).

Venue
Teaching is conducted on the Main campus of the University of Sydney at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, in the Queen Elizabeth II Research Institute for Mothers and Infants.

Entrance Requirements
The Master of Medicine (MM) or Master of Science in Medicine (MScMed) in Reproductive Science and Human Genetics is open to graduates in biological, medical, or paramedical sciences from an approved tertiary institution. Graduates from other disciplines will be considered and should also apply.

Overseas students are encouraged to apply and are accepted only on a full-time basis.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Candidates for this degree must be graduates, usually in science or medicine. Candidature lasts from 3-5 years. The degree is awarded for thesis considered to be a substantially original contribution to the subject concerned.

Master of Medicine (MMed) / Master of Science in Medicine (MSc Med)

This course is designed for graduates in medicine, biology, veterinary science, nursing, paramedical sciences and related disciplines such as psychology or social work from an approved tertiary institution. It is designed to meet the requirements of a large range of health professionals interested in the science, technology, clinical, public health and psychosocial aspects of reproduction and genetics and maternal and infant health.

The program includes coursework and research treatise with lectures and tutorials heald on two evenings per week and some Saturdays over a period of 2 years with treatise completed either concurrently (full-time mode) or in a subsequent year (part-time mode).

Applicants should be graduates in biological, medical or paramedical sciences with either honours degree or a good pass degree and at least 1 year work experience. Graduates from other disciplines with special interests in the fields will be considered and should also apply. This course is offered only as a fee-paying postgraduate course.

Scholarships

Australian citizens and permanent residents are encourages to apply for Australian Postgraduate Research Award (APA) and University of Sydney Postgraduate Award Scholarships.

International students may apply for an Overseas Postgraduate Research Scholarship.

However with all these scholarships competition is ectremely high because of the limited number of awards.
