As a SUN Mentor your role is to listen, provide constructive feedback and help your mentee consider options. You may want to refer them to resources, facilitate decision making and share your own experiences. You might help to identify areas for development, coach your mentee and allow opportunities to practice new skills. You may be a sounding board, ask questions to cause further exploration of ideas or challenge your mentee’s thinking. You provide guidance, not direction and do not solve problems but act as a collaborator in the problem solving process.
Keep in mind that mentees typically want:
- advice on career paths/options
- to learn how to develop maximum potential
- assistance in forward thinking
- to set career goals and strategies for achieving them
- to expand networks and broaden horizons
- to learn new skills
- a person who has been successful to use as a role model
- to raise their profile
- to get the big picture view
- to develop a better life perspective – balance work and home
- awareness of promotional opportunities
- help with job applications
- access to a variety of resources
Primary responsibilities you have as a mentor include:
- Maintaining confidentiality
- Being accessible
- Listening actively to your mentee
- Promoting responsible decision making
- Motivating and supporting your mentee to achieve their goals
- Ensuring a professional relationship
- Acting as a role model
- Recognising when it is time to relinquish the mentoring role
For detailed guidelines on conduct, equity and confidentiality for mentors and mentees, see the following University of Sydney policies:

SUN Mentors are required to complete an Expression of Interest to Register as a Mentor form. The information you provide is used to create your Mentor Profile. Mentor Profiles are placed on the SUN website for viewing by potential mentees. A sample Mentor Profile is included below. You can request that your profile be removed from the website at any time by contacting the SUN Secretary.
Once your Mentor Profile has been uploaded to the SUN website, it is important that you notify the SUN Secretary of any changes that need to be made to the details on your profile (including changes to contact details, availability etc).
