Sam Hamilton, 27, (BVSc 2001) is a PhD candidate who is developing disease modelling techniques to monitor the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI or bird flu) in the Australian poultry industry.
His research is a collaboration between the University of Sydney, the Australian Biosecurity Collaborative Research Centre (AB-CRC) and the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).
Only scholarships have made it possible for Sam to undertake this research.
It has major implications for biosecurity and contingency planning policies in the event of bird flu outbreaks, particularly the latest strain of the disease with its risks to humans.
Only scholarships (from the University of Sydney and the AB-CRC) have made it possible for Sam to undertake this research.
“They have greatly eased the financial pressures of being a student,” says Sam. “Without them, I would have to return to work or study overseas.”
Ultimately Sam hopes to model disease spread in developing countries where animal disease limits people's quality of life.
... says Sam, “Without them, I would have to return to work or study overseas.”
