What we do

Sydney University from Victoria Park

SydneyPeople is responsible for providing the University of Sydney with a range of strategic human resource services and advice while undertaking a variety of operational activities.

Working in partnership with staff in faculties/ units, we aim to develop a work environment where current staff can succeed, develop and enhance their careers. An environment which helps the University attract and retain a high-functioning, diverse workforce.

At all times, we encourage members of the University community to adopt the practices of respect for self, respect for others and responsibility for their own actions.

In mid-2006, human resources practitioners at the University were brought together into a shared services model. This resulted in the establishment of the SydneyPeople team with the responsibility for managing human resources services across the University.

The shared services model delivers a number of benefits to the University as a whole and to individual faculties and units, for instance:

  • Making available a level of skills and expertise that would be unaffordable in a decentralised model
  • Providing information and services more efficiently
  • Delivering greater responsiveness to customers
  • Allowing greater focus on customer service, rather than simple service delivery
  • Reducing administrative costs
  • Standardising HR processes and practices across the University

Most importantly, the shared services model allows you to focus on your core business of teaching and learning.

The SydneyPeople model has four elements which allow us to work closely with faculties and units.

1. HR Relationship Managers

HR Relationship Managers focus on building effective working partnerships with their client groups. They work directly with their clients and call upon the specialist services of each of the SydneyPeople portfolios to help faculties and units achieve both their individual goals and those of the University as a whole.

For reporting purposes, and to further the connection to strategic goals, HR Relationship Managers are responsible to the Deans they support as well as to the Director, SydneyPeople.

2. Specialists and Experts

Our specialist and expert teams are centralised. They provide services and expertise to faculties/units both directly and through the HR Relationship Management teams.

While reporting into their team leader, they work closely with the corresponding HR Relationship Manager and Co-ordinators reporting and providing advice.

3. HR Service Centre

The HR Service Centre provides a consistent approach to the interpretation and processing of staff information while delivering superior customer service through dedicated, client-focused teams. New technologies are currently being introduced with the aim of providing all staff with 24/7 access to web self service in the latter half of 2007.

The HR Service Centre also provides management information to leaders across the University giving them greater visibility of information relating to their teams.

4. Faculty/unit contacts

Faculty/unit staff are responsible for processing and implementing HR tasks and duties within their faculties, supported by members of the SydneyPeople team.
