Award Event - 2007

Sir Zelman Cowen Universities Fun Prize for Discovery in Medical Research presented to bio-informatics pioneer at Hebrew University Board of Governors Meeting, Jerusalem, June, 2007.

The annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was the venue for the presentation of the 2007 award of this prestigious new prize for medical research.

Fund Trustee, Mr Michael Dunkel, who is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Hebrew University, presented the Prize – a medallion and a cash award of $5,000 - to Professor Nir Friedman, from the School of Engineering and Computer Sciences, Hebrew University of Jerusalem for his work developing the computational basis for the analysis of the very large bodies of data emerging in the field of genomics since the completion of the Human Genome Project.

Professor Friedman's work was selected for this award for its broad application to many fields of medicine. He is the first recipient of the Prize at the Hebrew University.

Awarded in alternate years at the University of Sydney and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Prize aims to recognise a major contribution to the understanding or treatment of disease made by a researcher under 40 years of age at the time of application. The inaugural presentation of the award took place in Sydney, in 2006. This was the first presentation of the award at the Hebrew University.

Nominations for the award for 2008 are invited from researchers at the University of Sydney and close on 26 October, 2007. The winner of the award will be announced in April 2008. The 2008 Award will be sponsored by The Schwartz Foundation.
