Dan Heard

My work at the Centre focussed on the foundations of the observed thermodynamic asymmetry in time. Why, if the fundamental dynamical laws of the universe are invariant under time reversal, do we observe such a preponderance of irrerversible phenomena?

I have concentrated on two attempts to answer this question: (i) Robert Griffiths' attempt to derive the observed asymmetry from his Consistent Histories interpretation of quantum mechanics, and (ii) David Albert's claim that the observed asymmetry can be explained by the GRW interpretation of quantum mechanics (with Huw Price).

Apart from their intrinsic interest, these issues represent interesting case-studies which inform my PhD dissertation at the University of Cambridge - "The role of laws of nature in non-reductive physicalist metaphysics".
